Rouge the Bat is an undercover goverment agent, bent on owning all the jewels in the world; I guess she really wants to be rich. Once she spots a gem she wants, she will do anything to get it. Her behavior, looks, and speech mask her real personality.
Rouge is a treasure hunter that specializes in all sorts of gems.
Rouge steals a large diamond from a museum and eventually gets herself caught. She decided to join the president and work against Eggman so she not only can get the Chaos Emeralds, but recieve pay in gems. Rouge runs into Knuckles and sees the Master Emerald. Uh-oh, Knuckles, looks like you've got trouble on your hands, trouble with a capital "T". A breif intereferance by Eggman causes Knuckles to shatter the Master Emerald and send shards every where.
Rouge decided that she can get the Master Emerald pieces most easily if she sides with Eggman and Shadow. Neither of them knew it at the time, but Rouge was also there to find out about Project Shadow. Rouges manages to nick several Chaos Emeralds off of Prision Island before it blows up by bombs set up by Shadow.
When Rouge gets back to the colony, she finds out that Shadow doesn't look like the original desgins for Project Shadow, and starts to question whether or not he really is the ultimate life form. She notices that several Master Emerald shards have been dropped onto the Ark's outer area's because the shuttle Sonic and Co were on hit an asteroid, scattering the pieces Knuckles saving her. She gives Knuckles the shards she had, saying they stunk like echidna's. But as she left she tossed a smirk over her shouldr in the direction of Knuckles, you can tell she has was crush on him (Not to mention that the official Sonic Site says she does).
