Chaos is a water spirit who just has a grudge against all of humanity for what Tikal's father did to the chao he protected once. He was the original guardian of the Master Emerald, until the dunce leader of the Echidna's tried to steal the Seven Chaos Emeralds.
Chaos was a well meaning guardian of the Master Emerald and protecter of the Chao near the shrine. He only allowed Tikal near the Chao or Master Emerald because she didn't seem like a threat. However, her father was another story entirely. Tikal's dad brought his best warriors to the shrine and found Tikal blocking their path. This was her last hope to change his mind, but the warriors shoved her aside and hurt or killed the chao. When they got to the Master Emerald, Chaos appeared and used the power of the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Perfect Chaos. Tikal couldn't stand the destruction he was cuasing and used a chant her gradmother taught her to seal Chaos into the Emerald as well as her own soul.
When the Master Emerald shattered, Chaos was befriened by none other than Dr. Eggman. The scietist wanted to use Chaos to take over the world. What's new? Heh, but when Chaos was beaten with six of the seven Chaos Emeralds, he turned against Dr. Eggman and got the last one himself. In this manner he turned into Perfect Chaos again. Tikal enlisted the help of a blue hedgehog, Sonic who transformed, into Super Sonic to defeat the towering water spirit.
Once Chaos was transformed back into Chaos Zero, Tikal showed him a place where he could protect chao for the rest of eternity.
